(muditā): A feeling of joy or happiness when noticing the joy and happiness of others

There’s almost always someone in our lives that’s celebrating a joyful life experience. A new child, a new job or relationship, a marriage—these are some of the life events that tend to bring people joy and happiness.

Can you bring to mind someone who is experiencing some kind of joy or success in their life right now? Can you be aware of what they are going through, and imagine what they might be experiencing as they do? How would you feel in a similar situation?

As you are aware of the joy they might be feeling, can you connect to a sense of joy and celebration for them? Can you find a way to share joy for and with them?

If your happiness is not limited to the circumstances and constraints of your own life, if you can find joy in the happiness of others—there is no limit on how much joy and happiness it is possible for you to feel.
